Workshop: Zines and History!
Students make zine art while learning American history! Education and creativity come together in this innovative lesson that adapts to fit your students' age groups and topics of interest.
The lesson begins with a short presentation about zines: personal comics often made using collage art (no drawing skills needed)! I show examples of different kinds of zines and discuss their role in mass communication throughout American history.
Then we make our own zines! I provide old comic books and magazines related to a topic of interest and students learn how to assemble their own collage stories based on the topic. We conclude with a discussion about the art and the topic at hand.
Potential topics include:
-The development of American mass media
-Industrialization and labor movements
-The representation of gender and race in American popular culture
-The media construction of American youth culture
-The Civil Rights movement
